The interim manager as a lever for corporate governance

Interim manager: definition and description

Interim manager: definition

A Transitional leader is a interim manager who occupies a position within the general management of a company, for a period of one year. mission from transition management.

Interim manager: what he is not

Let's put an end to a preconceived idea and affirm it: the interim manager is an effective lever for the development and transformation of companies, whether SMEs, ETIs or large groups!

Too often reduced to a recourse for managing crisis situations or restructuring, IMfinity's conviction is, on the contrary, to give it its rightful place in serving a company's strategic objectives: organic growth, transformation, reorientation of strategy, reorganization, commercial development, external growth, digitalization, performance, operational excellence, remobilization of teams, CSR, LBO, Carve out... Interim management is now a fully-fledged part of the means available to corporate governance to add a skill to a CODIR or COMEX, or to fill a managerial vacancy, urgently if necessary.

What's more, it's an opportunity for the management team to benefit for a few months from the expertise and experience of a high-level professional, free from any influence and perfectly uninhibited in his or her analyses. Focused on results, the Interim Manager is able to take a fresh look at the company, open up new perspectives, break with habitual thinking, remobilize a management team, bring a breath of fresh air... all within the framework defined by his mission. In short, an effective renewal, with no long-term commitment (or "no impact on payroll") for the company, an investment with a return well in excess of the amount invested, and with the security of IMfinity service.

Transitional leader:
those qualities and skills that define him/her

The transitional leader has the following characteristics:
  • He has human qualities that are sought after in the market
  • He is an expert in his field (including the sector)
  • It ensures that the company's objectives are met
  • He/she leads all or part of the organisation
  • It provides an outside perspective
In a nutshell, the Transition Manager effectively provides governance of the company.

Interim manager:
how does it work?

Analysis, Pragmatism, Follow-up

IMfinity's intervention methodology, which is particularly well suited to interim managers, is deployed by the Associate Director. It combines speed of implementation (reduced to a few days, sometimes 24 hours) with a results-oriented approach. It takes place in several stages:

  • Listening to and analysing the client's needs in depth.
  • Definition of the mission through a roadmap co-constructed with the client, the Interim Manager and the Associate Director. Guided by a pragmatic vision, the roadmap establishes clear objectives and deliverables within a precise, accelerated timeframe.
  • Regular appointments as the project progresses mission and all the way to the end:
    • A meeting is held every evening during the first week with the Associate Director; the week concludes with an astonishment report by the Transition Manager, in order to identify possible adjustments to the roadmap.
    • From the2nd week, the action plan is implemented.
    • Weekly and then monthly meetings are scheduled throughout the assignment. The aim is to ensure that the roadmap is being respected, or to identify any gaps or needs for adjustment, due for example to changes within the company.
    • A feedback session is planned at the end.

With the IMfinity methodology, a two-person team consisting of an interim manager and an associate director is put at the service of the successful completion of the assignment. A guarantee of success for the company. But how can you be sure of choosing the right person?

Singularity, Empathy, Humility

Our speakers are selected by the Managing Partner on the basis of their extensive experience and solid know-how as managers. They have a strong ability to manage strategic and operational issues. Nevertheless, selecting an interim manager for a specific mission and a particular company is a delicate and complex operation. This is a particularly good example of the 3 key values that IMfinity aims to uphold in its business: Singularity, Empathy and Humility.

The uniqueness of IMfinity's services stems from the diversity and complementarity of our teams and the profiles of our contributors. It is based on a wide variety of professions, business sectors and functions. It is based on classic professional experiences, as well as more original and even exceptional ones. It is at work in the choice of each consultant, as it enables us to grasp the uniqueness and specificity of each assignment and each customer.

The selection process also calls on theempathetic skills of the Associate Director, who identifies the technical expertise required for the assignment (experience in company or business unit management, strategic vision, financial and management skills, HR skills, etc.), as well as the soft skills expected of a manager, such as listening, leadership, decision-making, communication and team-building skills... and, for an interim manager, empathy.

IMfinity considers these human qualities just as important as the level of expertise. An interim manager, and even more so in the case of an executive, is a combination of know-how AND interpersonal skills. This is why the client's corporate culture, management style and organization must be taken into account. For an interim manager, the mapping of players inside and outside the client company is also decisive. These different parameters, evaluated by the Associate Director, contribute to defining the profile of the interim manager: his or her type of leadership, management style, interpersonal skills, adaptability, etc. The aim is to enable immediate integration of the interim manager, who, it should be remembered, is operational within a few days of arriving at the customer's premises.

Finally, before leaving a company in which he or she has invested a great deal of time and effort over several months, the Interim Manager must know how to pass on the baton. He or she must be capable of completing the mission entrusted to him or her, achieving the expected objectives, while at the same time preparing for his or her departure and passing on the baton. The quality ofhumility that we expect from our interim managers is also expressed in the handover, and is equally essential to our team, in every aspect of our service:

  • in welcoming and listening to our clients, with the unprejudiced desire to provide a simple and effective response to their needs;
  • in the relationship with our interim managers, whom we accompany during the assignments but also during the intermission periods during which we offer them the opportunity to strengthen their skills through our coaching services or professional language training;
  • in our daily quest for excellence.

Interim management, particularly in executive positions, demands the highest standards in terms of understanding the client, selecting the consultant and monitoring the assignment.

At IMfinity, the Associate Director carries this responsibility. With solid experience as both an executive and an interim manager, he or she combines empathy, discernment and knowledge of company or BU management, enabling us not only to select the right interim manager, but also to support him or her throughout the assignment, and ultimately to provide the customer with the excellence expected in the quality of our service .
